“The Road Home” Mini-Football Tournament: Empowering Youth and Strengthening Community
On May 5–6, 2024, Road to Home hosted the “The Road Home” Mini-Football Tournament at Vake Football Stadium, Tbilisi, bringing together youth from Georgia’s displaced communities. The tournament officially opened with remarks by Jemal Dzagania, Chairman of the Organizing Committee and Rector of the Sports University, alongside representatives of local government, honored athletes from Abkhazia, and lecturers of the Sports Academy, emphasizing the event’s prestige and strategic importance.
The event combined competitive sport, cultural workshops, and educational sessions, providing youth with opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while deepening their cultural identity and community bonds. Engaging in structured sports activities offered a safe space to process trauma, reduce anxiety, and build emotional resilience, while interactive sessions and team play fostered social cohesion and cross-community trust.
Participants also benefited from mentorship and networking, learning directly from experienced athletes, lecturers, and community leaders, strengthening their capacity to lead initiatives and collaborate effectively.
By combining physical activity, cultural engagement, and leadership development, the tournament reinforced Road to Home’s mission to empower youth, strengthen resilience, and cultivate lasting bonds across Georgia’s displaced communities.
